It’s a little tough to follow though, considering that, due to assorted games in the series being remade numerous times, there are a substantial number of retcons.
The overarching storyline focuses on an angelic race known as the Eldeen, who mostly died off several centuries before the events of the games. Similarly, in Ys II, Adol finds the Celceta Flower to cure Lilia – and actually visits the country of Celceta in Ys IV, where he also returns to Esteria and meets up with many NPCs from the first two games. Throughout later games, you can find fruit from this tree. One of the central “characters” of the first game is the Roda Tree, which converses with Adol and helps him on his quest. For example, Dogi, an extremely minor character in the original Ys (he busts Adol out of a prison) ends up becoming one of the primary characters in Ys III, and keeps popping in throughout the series, eventually becoming a playable character in Ys Seven.
As the story goes, the devil opened the gates and flooded the city, as punishment for its decadence.Įven though all of the games take place in different regions, with a largely different cast of characters, there’s a lot of continuity spread throughout the game world. While not floating in the sky, it was built below sea level, but surrounded by dams. There was actually even a lost ancient city by the name of Ys, built near Brittany. All throughout the series, Adol runs in with the somewhat evil Romun Empire, which of course is an extremely transparent allusion to the Romans. Ys Seven takes place in Altago, the equivalent of Carthage. In Ys VI Adol ends up in the Great Vortex of Canaan, which is essentially the Bermuda Triangle, with a bit of the Atlantis myth sprinkled in. Ys V takes place in Afroca, which is naturally Africa, and features the city of Xandria, which is Alexandria. Ys IV takes place in Celceta, which lies somewhere around the Spain/France border. The isle of Esteria from the first game might or might not exist – judging by its location it might be the Île d’yeu – but other games are set in various analogues to real places. Most of the early games take place around the area where France would be. The continent of Eresia – where most of the Ys games take place – is based directly off Europe, sometimes very closely, other times more vaguely. The first two games focus on the civilization and story of the flying continent, although later games send Adol off to other lands, only occasionally returning to its myth and lore. So please don't take these labels too seriously ? we'd rather cover more awesome new games rather than exclude on technicalities. The name Ys refers to a floating island in the sky, long removed from the soil to seal away some terrible evil. It's also difficult to define "independent", because sometimes these games are developed by a single person in their home office, other times they are small companies separate from the usual AAA conglomerate. So, art style isn't really a prerequisite. Games like Night in the Woods don't directly recall any classic games, but the spirit fits with point-and-click adventure games of old. To be honest, we're using the term "retro indie" pretty loosely here. Some of these are reasonably well known among the indie scene, but we've made sure to include some of the less famous titles in hopes to give them some more exposure. Since HG101 concentrates on retro games, it made sense that we started covering these "new retro" independent games, so eventually we decided to compile it into a book.

(We highlighted a bunch of these in our 200 Best Games of All Time book, though they have full size write-ups here.) Many of these games also benefit from years of design evolution, and there are many cases where the fresher games even beat the old classics. Now, there are legions of classic style platformers, RPGs, adventure games, shoot-em-ups, and more, all available for extremely reasonable prices, just a few clicks away.

It used to be that retro video game fans would either need to import games from Japan at great expense, or get stuck playing portable titles, since those were the few places 2D games were released.
Now, in 2017, we're living with an embarrassment of riches. Not only was it a venue to sell games outside of the norm, but it also allowed independent developers easier access to sell their titles, and many patterned their works after the classic 8- and 16-bit games of their youths. It wasn't until the advent of digital distribution services like the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Steam that these types of games were resurrected. The shift to 3D rendered these types of games obsolete, or so the publishers felt. It may feel like a long time ago, but the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 generations (approximately 1995-2005) were hard times for fans of 2D games.
